The closure event of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 for Greece, the Charter for the protection of Byzantine heritage monuments and the music Memory

In 2018, Europe celebrated its heritage and the ways in which its cultural diversity constitutes its greatest wealth and the principal trait of European identity, which reinforces the union of its member states. On December the 2nd, Greece celebrates the closure of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 in a monument which has housed religions and cultures that passed from Thessaloniki, throughout the centuries: Rotunda.

Greece has chosen to celebrate this closure with an emblematic event: the endorsement of the Charter of Thessaloniki - the Charter for the protection of Byzantine heritage monuments, the fruit of consultation between 23 countries which take part in the Conference “Byzantine Monuments and World Heritage”, organized by the European Centre for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments from 30 November to 2 December, under the auspices of the Hellenic National Committee for UNESCO.

Along with Greece will celebrate in Rotunda the other 22 countries of Europe and the Mediterranean which will have endorsed by then the “Charter of Thessaloniki”.

The distinguished early music ensemble Ex Silentio will guide us in a fascinating journey starting from the traditional music of the Balkans, passing from Medieval Europe, making a stop at the Sephardic tradition, so familiar to Thessaloniki of the past, visiting Armenia, going through the Arab countries, and allowing to music Mneme (=memory) to unite the Mediterranean in exactly the same way as the monuments unite again all these countries with common goals, on the occasion of the Charter.

The event starts at 19:00 and is open to the public, with a limited number of seats available upon reservation priority ekbmm.rotonda@gmail.com (each reservation should state the name and phone contact details. Entrance will only be permitted upon the registration list).

The closure event of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 will salute the Minister of Culture and Sports Myrsini Zorba, the Mayor of Thessaloniki Yannis Boutaris, and the President of the Hellenic National Committee for UNESCO Ms Aikaterini Tzitzikosta. The event is organized by EKBMM with the support of the EYCH 2018 Coordination Team for Greece, the Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Thessaloniki and with the financing of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture.
